Market Recon Engine
Example session with this skill installed
I'm building FocusForge, a Pomodoro-style focus timer app. Can you run a competitive intel dossier against Forest, Toggl Track, and Session, and tell me where I have room to differentiate on pricing and features?

Executive Snapshot
This is a two-tier market wearing one label. Forest and Session compete directly as consumer focus/Pomodoro apps; Toggl Track is a different animal — a per-seat team time-tracking and billing tool that happens to share the "timer" category. That mismatch is itself the finding: most "focus app" comparisons buyers run lump these together, which means the actual consumer-focus lane (Forest vs. Session) is thinner than it looks, and pricing there is oddly inconsistent — one-time purchase vs. subscription for near-identical feature sets.
Feature Comparison Matrix
| Capability | Forest | Toggl Track | Session | FocusForge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gamified focus mechanic | ✓ (tree growth) | ✗ | Partial (mood/emoji log) | ? |
| Distraction/app blocking | ✓ (iOS 16+ Allow Lists) | ✗ | ✓ (Mac-only) | ? |
| Cross-device sync | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ (Mac/iOS only) | ? |
| Team/billing features | ✗ | ✓ (core product) | ✗ | ? |
| Analytics/reflection prompts | Partial (screen time stats) | ✓ (profitability reports) | ✓ (session log + mood) | ? |
| Real-world social-good hook | ✓ (real trees planted) | ✗ | ✗ | ? |
| Windows/Android support | ✓ | ✓ | ✗ (Apple-only) | ? |
Pricing Teardown
| Forest | Toggl Track | Session | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry tier | Free (Android) / $3.99 one-time (iOS) | Free, up to 5 users | 7-day free trial |
| Paid tier | ~$9–$55/yr for cosmetic/premium extras | $9–$18/seat/month (annual) | $4.99/mo or $39.99/yr |
| Model | One-time purchase (iOS) | Per-seat SaaS subscription | Consumer subscription |
Pattern: Forest is the outlier with a one-time-purchase model in a category everyone else has moved to subscription. Reviewers flag this as its biggest value driver — "most competitors push subscription models, making Forest's one-time payment particularly appealing." Session and the rest of the subscription pack cluster around $40–$55/year. Toggl Track's per-seat pricing isn't a real comparison point for a solo-focus app — its presence in this set mostly confirms FocusForge shouldn't be pricing against it at all.
Positioning Map
Axes: Gamified/playful ↔ Data-driven/analytical, One-time payment ↔ Subscription.
- Forest: playful, one-time payment — occupies its own quadrant almost alone
- Session: analytical (mood logs, session history), subscription
- Toggl Track: analytical, subscription, but for teams — off this map entirely
- Empty quadrant: playful/gamified + subscription-free-forever with genuinely deep analytics. Nobody currently combines Forest's emotional hook with Session's data depth without asking for either a one-time fee or a recurring one on top.
SWOT — Forest
- Strengths: simple, emotionally sticky mechanic; huge installed base (60M+); one-time pricing as differentiator
Weaknesses: shallow beyond the core loop; iOS "Pro" tier pricing is unclear/unlisted, which reviewers flag as a hidden-cost risk (unconfirmed — worth Forest fixing, worth FocusForge avoiding)
- Opportunities: Windows/desktop-first users still underserved by its mobile-first design
- Threats: cheaper direct clones of the tree mechanic
SWOT — Session
- Strengths: strong analytics/reflection loop; high rating (98% on Setapp); Slack/calendar integrations
Weaknesses: Mac/iOS-only — no Windows or Android, a real gap for cross-platform users; blocking features Mac-only even within its own ecosystem
- Opportunities: cross-platform users currently have to leave the Apple ecosystem for a comparable tool
- Threats: bundled into Setapp, which may cap its independent growth incentive
Market Whitespace
Gamified + genuinely deep analytics, no recurring fee. Forest owns "fun," Session owns "data," nobody owns both without a subscription tax.
2. True cross-platform (Windows + Android + Apple) with app-blocking. Session's blocking is Mac-only; Forest's is iOS 16+ only. A tool that blocks distractions equally well everywhere is currently unclaimed.
3. Transparent pricing as a stated value, not just an accident of Forest's model. Forest's own reviewers had to hunt for its Pro-tier price. Leading with "no hidden tiers" is available messaging nobody's using on purpose.
If You Only Do Three Things
- Price as a one-time purchase or a clearly-capped lifetime tier — this is Forest's proven differentiator in a subscription-heavy category, and reviewers actively reward it.
- Ship Windows + Android blocking at parity with iOS/Mac — Session's biggest documented weakness is platform lock-in.
- Combine the emotional hook (Forest's strength) with real session analytics (Session's strength) as your core pitch — that combination doesn't currently exist.

What you get
About this skill
Market Recon Engine turns a rough idea — your product plus a handful of competitor names or URLs — into a decision-ready competitive intelligence dossier. Not a research summary. A structured output built to be acted on.
Give it your product (or none, if you're just scoping a market) and 1–6 competitors. It researches each one, then builds:
- Feature comparison matrix — the capabilities that actually drive purchase decisions, not a padded checklist
- Pricing teardown — every tier, what's gated where, and what the pattern implies for your own pricing
- Positioning map — two meaningful axes for the market, with each competitor plotted and the empty quadrant named
- SWOT per competitor — tight, evidence-based, not generic
- Market whitespace — 2–4 specific, defensible gaps, each with a reason it's real
- Recon cadence template — a reusable prompt to re-run the check monthly or quarterly, flagging only what's changed
- Top 3 moves — the highest-leverage actions the research actually implies
