Summarize hybrid-work-policy-v3.md for me. I'm an engineering manager with 8 people in our Austin hub and 3 fully remote engineers. I need to know what changes for my team and what I personally have to do, and by when.

Hybrid Work and Equipment Policy v3.0: summary for an engineering manager (8 Austin hub, 3 remote)

I read the whole document (10 sections plus 2 appendices). Section numbers are in brackets. Anything I've worked out myself rather than read in the policy is labelled

    Implication.

    Executive summary

Version 3.0 replaces v2.1. It was approved 2026-09-15 and takes effect

2026-11-01. The biggest change for you is that office attendance is no longer left to the manager. Hub-assigned employees must come in at least

two anchor days a week, and you have to choose and publish your team's anchor days by 2026-10-24. The rest of the policy cuts benefits: a smaller home-office stipend, internet reimbursement down to $50 with receipts required, and laptops replaced every four years instead of three. The one new benefit is 20 work-from-anywhere days a year. Your remote engineers don't have to come into the office, but they're expected at up to two company-paid team gatherings a year.

    Key points

    • Classification depends on where someone lives, not where they sit. Hub-assigned means living within 50 miles of Seattle, Austin or Toronto. Everyone else is Remote [3.1].

Two or more anchor days a week for Hub-assigned staff. Each team sets its own days. Work-from-anywhere days don't count as anchor days [3.2, 4.3].

Remote staff don't have to attend a hub. They're expected at in-person gatherings, held no more than twice a year and paid for under the Travel Policy [3.4].

Exceptions: you can approve up to 4 consecutive weeks off anchor days for medical, caregiving or bereavement reasons. Anything longer goes to People Ops [3.3].

Moves: an employee must tell People Ops at least 30 days before moving. If the move changes their classification, both you and People Ops must approve it before it happens. A move to another state may affect pay, which this policy doesn't cover [3.5].

    • Work-from-anywhere: up to 20 working days a year, US or Canada only, and unused days don't carry over [4].

Stipend: new hires get $600, then $300 every 24 months. Existing staff who received the old $1,000 get their first $300 24 months after they received it. Claims must be made within 90 days of purchase [5.2–5.3].

Laptops: replaced every 4 years. Laptops issued before 2023-11-01 still get the old 3-year replacement, one time only [5.4].

Internet: up to $50/month (was $75) for anyone working from home at least 2 days a week. From Q1 2027 a receipt must be uploaded each quarter. Nov–Dec 2026 are paid without a receipt [6, 9.3].

Security: work only on company devices, use the VPN whenever outside a hub, report a lost device within 24 hours, and don't print confidential documents at home without a cross-cut shredder [7].

Scope: contractors, interns on placements under 12 weeks, and staff covered by a collective agreement are excluded [1.2].

    What it means for you

    • Implication: check classifications before you plan around them. "Austin hub" and "fully remote" are how you describe your team, not how the policy classifies people. One of your Austin 8 who lives more than 50 miles away is Remote and owes no anchor days. One of your remote 3 who lives within 50 miles of Seattle or Toronto is Hub-assigned and owes two days a week at that hub. Compare the emails People Ops sends on 10-17 with your roster. That leaves a week before your 10-24 deadline, and anyone misclassified can appeal until 10-31.
    • Implication: pick anchor days with the remote engineers in mind. They won't be in the office on anchor days, so meetings held then will still be hybrid. You can't change their attendance, but you can decide which meetings happen in person and which stay remote-friendly.
    • You must go through People Ops before any discipline over attendance [8.2]. Your tools are the 4-week exception and escalation to People Ops, not a direct warning. People Ops reports attendance to the committee quarterly, as totals without names [8.3].
    • Implication: tell the team about the pay cuts before November. Internet reimbursement drops from $75 to $50, the stipend shrinks, and laptops last a year longer. Hub-assigned staff still qualify for internet reimbursement, because two anchor days leaves three days at home. The policy also applies to you personally as an employee.

    Numbers that matter

    2 anchor days a week · 50-mile hub radius · up to 4 weeks of exception you can approve · 30 days' notice before a move · 20 work-from-anywhere days a year · $600 + $300 every 24 months · 90-day claim window · $50/month internet (was $75) · 4-year laptop cycle (laptops from before 2023-11-01 stay on 3) · 14 days to return equipment after leaving · 24 hours to report a lost device · up to 2 gatherings a year · next review by 2027-11-01.

    What the policy doesn't cover

Who approves work-from-anywhere days. The policy doesn't say whether employees need your approval or just take them [4].

How attendance is tracked, such as badge data or self-reporting. It only says People Ops reports the totals [8.3].

Teams that mix hub and remote people, or hub-assigned staff whose nearest hub isn't their team's hub. The policy assumes each team has one anchor-day schedule.

    • Part-time staff. They're in scope, but the policy doesn't say whether two anchor days is reduced for them.
    • Texas-specific exceptions. Appendix B is "maintained on the intranet" and isn't included, so check it for Austin.
    • Pay changes after a move. These are left to the Compensation Policy, which isn't included.
    • Travel details for the gatherings are left to the Travel Policy, which isn't included.

    About this skill

For anyone handed a long document and asked what matters in it. Give it the document plus your role, why you are reading it, and what you will do with it. You get a digest tuned to that purpose, not a generic summary.

    What you get

    • An executive summary in 3-5 sentences: what the document is, its central claim, and why it matters to you.
    • 5-10 key points, each with a section or page reference so you can check it in seconds.
    • Implications for your role, clearly labelled as implications rather than the document's own claims.
    • The numbers that matter: figures, dates, and thresholds a decision would turn on.
    • What the document does NOT cover, so you don't assume a gap is addressed.

    What it refuses to do

    • Summarize a document it could not fully read. It tells you exactly what was unreadable instead.
    • Present its own interpretation as the document's claim.
    • Pad the digest with quotations.
    • Start without context. If you don't say who you are and why you are reading, it asks first.

    What's in the zip

    • SKILL.md: the skill.
    • references/recipe.md: the full step-by-step recipe with examples and variations.
    • evals/: test cases you can run to check its behavior.
